He actually believed it, fully. Whether from sheer optimism and affection for the man in his arms, or simply out of naivety, he believed it. But- and the thought was enough that he pressed a kiss to Poe's temple then turned to get up and out of the bed before his expression showed- if he ever lost Poe, the idea of never stepping foot in a place that had been most his...
It just left an ache, right where his heart should be, even thinking of it. Better to switch topics.
"Yeah, I know." It was the easy admittance of a relationship that though
strained, still existed. He knew his father loved him. That was never in
question. It was the how, that was the problem. And even then - a problem
easily solved by just going his own way anyway.
He didn't see Finn's expression, didn't even notice a difference, his own
attention fully on himself as he sat up - sore everywhere. Everywhere. But
exceedingly pleased. He grunted as he stood up, and then looked up at
Finn's voice, chuckling darkly.
"Ah. Well. Good thing you fit my clothes so well," he teased, stepping over
to the closet. "Might be a little old, but --" He grabbed an armful of
random items and held them out for Finn to choose from.
He grabbed a pair at random, tossing them over a shoulder with the promise of taking care of those, and getting out of the now...uncomfortably crusty pair he was still wearing in a moment. The train of thought from before, though he tried to shove it away, had left a want that may as well have been a compulsion in him. Finn wrapped his arms around Poe's waist so tug him against his chest, and pressed his lips against the now deeply bruised skin of where shoulder met neck.
He wasn't afraid of Kes. That was going to be fine. But the chance that he might, however unintentionally, take the man's side over Poe's was becoming a real one. Getting the words out had been wonderful, made this all the more real in a way Finn hadn't expected. But it made just how much he had to lose all the more clear, too.
"Not at all," He admitted happily, "But that's never stopped me doing
anything before."
He let Finn pull him close, smiled at the dull ache that throbbed in his
shoulder as Finn kissed it. His mind was far, far from death, at the
moment. But that would probably change as soon as he stepped in the hangar.
He was silent for a long moment, spending more time than he probably should if they were actually going to leave this room in the next hour simply moving his lips lightly along Poe's skin. It wasn't even kissing, really, just feeling the contact up and along Poe's neck, behind his ear. Maybe he could just take him. Steal a ship and lock him away, all Finn's and totally safe. Would anyone really blame him?
He smiled, mouth still pressed lightly to Poe's skin. Nice dream.
"No, it never does."
And he loved him for it, the fondness drenching his tone. They belonged in the battle field, the both of them.
He always enjoyed it when Finn was affectionate, and wasn't going to rush
him, even if he misunderstood the source of the hesitation. Instead he just
ran his hand back and forth over Finn's wrist at his waist.
"You need help putting those on?" he teased instead.
What he needed was to throw Poe back on the stripped bed and not get up again for another few days. But there were promises to keep and if he mentioned that idea to Poe he knew they'd probably be missing dinner. So he planted one last kiss and stepped back to change.
It took him a little while to get dressed himself - more sore now than he
had been before - and his jacket didn't cover the bruises on his neck,
which were slowly turning purple. He didn't care. He thought about
unbuttoning, just a little, to flash the bite marks too - but resisted the
temptation. He really shouldn't taunt his father, even with something that
made him happy.
At some point it would just be sad.
So they were visible because he didn't have a way of covering them, not
because he was showing off, and he flashed Finn a smile before stepping
back out of the room. Kes was in the garden when he wandered up.
Finn very intentionally took longer to reach their destination than Poe. He was going to give the man a moment to adjust to the fact his son had apparently undergone an assault in the last hour before Finn saw his face. It probably wasn't that big a deal- Poe was a grown man, and Finn couldn't believe for an instant he hadn't had his share of adventures while a teenager still living under Kes' roof. But that was all easier to think about than the emotional ride he'd requested the men go on.
There were some voices from the garden, but none raised, and then Poe
laughed, rubbing at his neck with a slight flush as his father sighed,
looking at him bemused, turning his head to look at Finn as he walked up.
He didn't say anything to Finn, exactly, but he did give him a knowing look.
In that look was something else, almost a gratitude, and a relief. He
hadn't heard Poe laugh in a long time.
"Alright, you ready to continue your tour?" Poe asked, looking quite a bit
more lively than he had when Finn was on the first leg of said tour.
Finn offered a slightly apologetic smile to the older man- this had all been done under his roof and all- but it didn't stop him from placing a hand on Poe's lower back as they started walking. That morning it had been to make sure Poe wasn't going to collapse, and there was still a touch of that now. But his fingers also curled lightly around Poe's hip now, a casually possessive position. Good friends.
Poe didn't even bother with subtlety - leaning to plant a kiss on Finn's
ear when he felt the hand on the waist, before slinging an arm over his
shoulders. Kes followed, bemused, but not unhappy - though that faded
slightly the closer they got to the hangar.
It was obvious, how long it had been since it had been opened. Poe hit the
control panel and the door creaked and complained, whining before it slowly
started to chug itself open. Inside were a few different ships - most in
various states of disrepair, but one that looked whole, if covered in dust.
An RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor.
Poe pulled in a breath, a fond, sad smile on his face. "There she is. Isn't
she a beaut?"
He didn't look back at Kes, who hovered outside the door, and didn't step
in.
Finn didn't have the connection to ships, to the hanger, to the past Poe did. He looked at the Interceptor and saw a neglected piece of machinery. But he looked at Poe and that was enough. He couldn't quite see it through the other man's eyes, but he could get the gist. It was indeed a beaut, because it meant something to Poe.
Poe just smiled widely and stepped up to it, slipping out of Finn's grasp
so that he could press his hand against the ship's side, leaving a hand
print in the dust as he pulled it away.
"Shouldn't have brought me in here, Finn," He teased, grinning. "Now I want
to fly it." He stepped further into the room, to the half-built thing that
looked like it was something between a speeder and a pod racer, but really
was just a pile of junk.
Kes still stood at the door, took a deep breath - and then turned to walk
away.
He leaned against the door and grinned at Poe's enthusiasm, shaking his head slightly. No, there would be no flying. Cleaning, yeah. Finn was scrubbing this place down himself. But no flying.
The movement of Kes' retreat caught his eye, and Finn hesitated for a moment, torn between Poe and watching the older man walk away. But he'd fought his battle for the day. No need to try and force the whole war at once, not unless he was looking for a quick and decisive defeat.
He hadn't been joking about repairing the damn hanger. It gave him something to do for a few hours each day, anyway, other than defiling Poe's childhood room. In fact, it gave him more to do than he'd originally anticipated. He wasn't even sorting through piles of junk, if anyone was going to do that it was Poe who'd actually know what was real junk and what was junk with potential. The dusting and oiling and scrubbing and organizing, though. The years had left enough of that to make Poe flash back to his days of sanitation duty.
Keeping Poe relatively still while he was doing this added an extra layer of challenge. Speaking of, Finn stood, cracking his back from being bent over so long, and looked for the rogue pilot.
Poe was happily sorting through the 'junk', though he would never call it
that. Very little of it ended up in a disposal pile - most of it got sorted
into piles that he referred to fondly as 'unfinished projects' and ended up
next to one of the half-finished vehicles.
At the moment, however, he was sitting inside the trash-heap of a speeder,
reinstalling a new control panel. The movement of Finn standing brought his
head up.
It was moments like these he was fairly sure the universe was having a
running joke with him. Poe wasn't overly exerting himself, so he had no
reason to complain about what he was doing. So there was no escaping the
upcoming admission of total mechanical ignorance.
It was more a grumble than anything, but the scenarios were close enough it
brought her to mind. But at least he could get the device without Bb-8 this
time.
"She'd like it here."
As he handed off the...round thing he nodded at the speeder Poe was working
on.
He wasn't expecting to hear her name. It had been so completely about them,
for the last few days, that he hadn't even really thought about her - and
the sudden mention brought him right out of whatever it was he'd been
thinking about.
"-- yeah," He replied, trying to make a swift recovery.
He wasn't the only one who was Finn's. "BB-8 said she was - ah - quite a
gear head."
It was hard to forget about Poe's arranged marriage he'd set up for Finn and Rey. So, dust and grease covered as he is (as they are), he leaned over to press a kiss to the side of his neck. But despite Poe's obvious fumbles, he wasn't just going to pretend he wasn't looking forward to her coming back, that she wasn't a part of his...family might be the wrong word. But life, world. A major part.
"Yeah. Thought she was gonna shoot me when I couldn't pick out the...thing. From the stuff."
"The thing from the stuff," he repeated, incredulously, but the kiss did
its work and he relaxed.
It would probably be easier if he knew her beyond the legend, but as it was
she was just a mythic figure that hung over Finn like a cloak.
However, it was a cloak that would keep him safe - a cloak that would still
be there, when he wasn't. So the jealousy mellowed into almost a calm
reassurance. Rey. Yeah.
"I can try to teach you, but I'm afraid even my knowledge is pretty
specific to how to fly the things. But I'm sure we can scramble up
something for you to impress her with, when she gets back."
"There was a lot of stuff. And we were about to die."
He can't help the slightly defensive edge that comes into his voice- he is an excellent soldier. Not a mechanic. There was no reason for Poe to have that tone. But it ends in a self-deprecating chuckle, along with another kiss pressed to his ear.
"We'll save it for another day. But I think I'll be happy to just watch you two go at it."
